The general process
- Step 1Site evaluation and perc test. Nye County's ISDS checklist calls for an engineered percolation test no more than one year old.
- Step 2Design and plot plan. The application includes an approved plot plan showing the system, well, structures and setbacks.
- Step 3Submit to Nye County Building & Safety. The checklist notes there may be a 15 business day turnaround for plan review, and lists the office at 2041 E. Calvada Blvd. N, Ste. 3, Pahrump, NV 89060.
- Step 4Installation by a licensed contractor (classification C-27 under NAC 624), with county inspections as required.
- Step 5Ongoing service. Advanced treatment units generally need periodic maintenance. The EPA recommends that systems with mechanical components be inspected about once a year.
Advanced treatment in Pahrump
According to NDEP's Onsite Sewage Disposal System program page, Pahrump is a Nitrogen Management Area requiring advanced treatment systems. These systems add a treatment step, often aerobic, that reduces nitrogen before effluent reaches the soil. They cost more to install and maintain than a basic tank and field. Ask your installer about operating costs and service contracts.
Replacing an existing system
If an older system has failed, the replacement may need to meet current requirements, not the ones in place when the original went in. Start with an evaluation by a septic contractor, then talk to the county about permit requirements.
Questions to ask an installer
- What's your Nevada license number and classification?
- Who handles the perc test, engineering and permit application?
- Which treatment unit do you propose, and what does ongoing service involve?
- What's included: tank, field, risers, connection to the house, backfill, cleanup?
Regulations: NDEP's program page points residential individual sewage disposal systems to NAC 444, and the county checklist asks applicants to review the NAC and NRS. Related: drain fields · inspections
